One of Stoke-on-Trent’s most-iconic hotels is ready to reopen – after being cleared of asylum seekers. Best Western Stoke-on-Trent City Centre Hotel, in Hanley, stopped taking reservations and weddings were cancelled after accepting asylum seekers in November 2022.
That decision led to protests and counter-protests. But the asylum seekers have now gone and the hotel is having a ‘full refurbishment’.
It is reopening on Monday 1 June. But the leisure club will remain closed.
In a social media post, the hotel stated: “Following the termination of the exclusive use Government contract, our hotel is undergoing a complete refurbishment. This is being completed in stages around the business.
“We are reopening on 1 June and we would love to welcome guests old and new. We are initially opening with a limited number of totally refurbished bedrooms; Bennetts Bar, which is also open to the public; and our restaurant will be serving breakfast seven days a week with non-resident guests being welcomed. Our conference and function rooms will also be open for all your meeting and event needs. Unfortunately at this initial opening stage the leisure club will remain closed.”
The Best Western Stoke-on-Trent City Centre Hotel – formerly known as the Quality Hotel and The Grand – has been owned by Prince Hotels since 2000 and currently operates under a Best Western franchise agreement. The 135-bedroom venue was put on the market earlier this year for offers above £3.75 million.
The Trinity Street hotel is across four floors and has a two-storey annexe. In addition to the bedrooms, there is a restaurant, two bars, lounges, multiple guest seating zones and 11 meeting rooms as well as an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and gym, and a 150-space car park.
