Journalist and editor Abigail Nicholson found the perfect, easy, and crispy chips to add to any easy teas, and she claims they taste even better than what KFC has to offer

£2.50 Iceland chips are perfectly crispy and taste even better than KFC

Chips are an absolute staple in any Brit’s diet, whether you make them yourself from scratch, by seasoned options or opt for a frozen version that’s easy to throw into the oven. However, sometimes having chips at home can leave people longing for a chippy tea or chips from their favourite fast food restaurant such as McDonald’s, KFC or Five Guys.

But while setting myself a task of making as many meals as I could for my family by spending just £20 in Iceland, I came across a bag of frozen chips that completely surpassed my expectations. While trying to keep my food shopping cost down, I decided to try the Aunt Bessie’s Skin On Homestyle Chips, which were in Iceland’s 10 items for £10 offer.

The first time I tried the chips were when I made a toad in the hole for my family with veg and the chips on the side. I cooked them in the air fryer for 20 minutes and shook the basket halfway through cooking.

After being fully cooked, I’ll be honest, the chips didn’t look like anything special compared to other frozen potatoes I had tried in the past. However, I did notice that the chips didn’t leave any fat at the bottom of the air fryer after cooking.

But when I first bit into one of the chips, I was blown away by how crispy and well seasoned they were. Like with many frozen chips, there is added salt, but they also had a stunning paprika and turmeric flavour that wasn’t too over the top.

I can hand on heart say that the product is one of the best frozen chips I have ever tried, and I’d say they are even better than KFC.

On the Iceland website the chips are described as “crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and made using our finest potatoes”.

However, they also added that the chips are ‘homestyle’ and ‘every bit as good as homemade’, which is a statement I cannot agree with as I’d never be able to make something this crispy and delicious.

I’m not the only one who thinks these chips are the real deal, there are hundreds of reviews online, with come declaring that the product is better than McDonald’s.

One person said: “I’ve bought Aunt Bessie’s products before, but have never tried the homestyle chips with skin on. Mainly because the children prefer ‘ordinary chips’, but when served up for dinner, they were all eaten and enjoyed so much I’ve been asked to buy them again.

“The chips are fluffly and light, but chunky so they taste of proper potatoes you’ve done yourself. I did cook them slightly longer in the oven (than said on packaging), but did this to ensure they were as we like them.

“They do not disappoint, will definitely be added to my shopping list for the future as they’re a good addition to the freezer for handy meals.”

A second said: “These were the best chips I’ve tasted in a long time..”

A third added: “Actually really nice, not greasy, but still have a bit of a ‘homemade’ feel/taste/texture about them. Only gripe would be the price for the size but in fairness I think they’re still worth it anyway.”

The chips are now included in Iceland’s new 15 items for £15 offer that’s available online.
