Fucked up government?
Nah, all the teachers are bodyslamming your kids.
They used to have schools for “maladjusted” kids and would do self defence classes for teachers to restrain the kids. This was scrapped and they integrated these kids in to all the other state schools. I don’t see why the situation has arisen that these kid with learning difficulties have had to be healed down. However, on the flip side many teachers are on the receiving end of violence from pupils and their parents. One thing you will never see in schools/education environments are the posters you get in hospitals, gyms, dentists, post offices and supermarkets telling people that it’s not appropriate to abuse their staff.
“The focus needs to be on making sure that we should never use restraint, because we should be engaging in communication with a child,” he said.
This reminds me of a ~~head teacher~~ Academy leader who chose to share important advice on discipline with the whole staff. Apparently if you came across one kid beating the hell out of another you should stand by them and tell them what they are doing. ‘you are fighting , fighting is not allowed, you are fighting’. He said this was very effective and then went back to his office , two locked doors away from the rest of the school , rarely to be seen again. There again as a very successful school descended into The Lord of the Flies and some of the best and most experienced teachers left he emerged to tell a staff meeting that studies showed a high turnover of staff demonstrated a successful school , and we were doing great because the friends and colleagues who had left were rubbish so we would be better off ( as they were replaced by short term supply teachers and teaching assistants).
Saying that restraint should never be used is quite an extreme position, and would almost certainly be unsafe for teachers and other pupils.
Restraining a child with learning disabilities should be avoided as much as possible but there are situations where it is absolutely necessary.
For example, it’s not uncommon for Autistic children to be aggressive and violent. I imagine there are also situations where restraint is necessary to stop a child self-harming.
The prone restraint does seem needlessly dangerous though.
I think however you look at it restraining children is always going to be a very difficult topic although I wouldn’t be surprised if there were many instances where it’s done a lot of damage. However, it’s not simply about reducing the amount of restraint but making sure that the restraint is appropriate and the individual needs of the child being restrained are always being monitored. Any child being restrained should be having regular reviews where plans are put in place to minimize negative impacts and general amount needed and I again wouldn’t be surprised if that isn’t the case now.
