The USA jumped out to a 4-0 lead and got an easy  7-3 victory over Hungary on Monday. Captain Justin Faulk (Detroit Red Wings), Ryan Leonard (Washington Capitals), and Matthew Tkachuk (Florida Panthers) each scored two goals, and Tommy Novak (Pittsburgh Penguins) finished with five assists. That was one off the World Championship single-game record.

Leonard, Tkachuk, and Edmonton Oilers prospect Isaac Howard share the USA team lead with three goals each, while Novak now has a team-best seven points.

Austria is coming off a 5-2 loss to Finland on Sunday that put its quarterfinal hopes in jeopardy. The Austrians lost in the quarterfinals last year and trailed 4-0 in Sunday’s game before finally getting on the board when Benjamin Nissner scored 3:24 into the third period.

The IIHF World Championship continues through May 31, with U.S. television coverage on NHL Network. Last year, the United States won the title for the third time, with Switzerland finishing second, Sweden third, and Denmark fourth.
