Got to hate when you have an Irish name abroad from ireland

  1. An Uber driver in the US once told me that I should take a more “normal, American name, like Ann or something”.

  2. I knew one born Órfhlaith who just went by Orla, in part because she lived in the US and didn’t want to face all the variations on ‘orf-late’

  3. We got a new guy at our makerspace and he has a mildly hard name to pronounce and I have a vocal disability and can’t even get my voice to do the 90º turn on the last part of the name and I feel bad cause I KNOW he gets called all sorts of things that arent his name.

  4. I work with a Caoimhin not a day goes by where he doesn’t have to explain how to spell or pronounce his name on the phone.

  5. I live abroad and I had to adopt a nickname. Nothing wrong with it I reckon. But it’s really nice to sometimes bump into a random Irish person though and being able to introduce myself with my real name.

  6. Lived in the US, and I refuse to feel embarrassed by my name just so Brad and Madison don’t have to put 5 seconds of effort into hearing a new name

  7. I work for an Australian company and have had to adopt the work name “James” as I work in sales and my name was too exotic for the old Australian women and they kept thinking it was a scam haha
