Totally unexpected. Who could have possibly foreseen this?
I’m sure the UK only broke international law in a very specific and limited way
One of the letters in today’s Times:
>Sir, The Northern Ireland Protocol Bill is a clear breach of international law. The protocol provides a mechanism for adopting unilateral “safeguard measures” after consultation via a joint committee; having failed to exhaust that procedure it is not open to the government to rely on the doctrine of necessity. In any event, that doctrine requires “grave and imminent peril” to which the state has not contributed. It is impossible to understand how those criteria could be satisfied. The government agreed the protocol with its eyes wide open, and it is not even now advancing the bill on an urgent basis: indeed, it is telling the DUP that progress on the bill is dependent on the restoration of power-sharing. The proposal to remove the jurisdiction of the EU Court of Justice is far from “necessary”, however politically convenient it may be. The bill shows a lack of commitment to the rule of law and to a rules-based international order that damages the reputation of the UK. We hope parliament will refuse to be complicit in it.

the outrage of Brexiteers is pleasing.
Lol. Cue school leavers threatening that Boris will launch spitfires. Epic fail.
Genuine question, why does it seem like the Tories are doing everything they can to drive this country into the ground? Why do they hate us so much?
As a matter of interest, what are the consequences of breaking international law? Fines? Sanctions? By whom would the punishment be meted out and how would it be enforced?
over illegal unilateral Brexit deal changes*
Do you think Boris will be begging “lefty” lawyers to help him out here?
The amount of public money the tories have wasted challenging legal action for their bullshit policies they try to push through is insane.
This is going to be like Julius Francis… Kick and effective
This was logical, as Boris decided to break the old treaty in place in regards to Ireland/North Ireland. The logical outcome will be border controls just as it should be – since that is the requirement of Schengen. Boris knew that prior to him deciding to cancel the treaty; now he is selling it as anti-EU rhetoric.
dont blame the uk just blame the people in charge
Living on this shitty, windy, rainy rock fucking blows
EU: the NIP is international law, it can not be changed, it is perfect.
Also EU: we are open for negotiation on NIP.
So they want to negotiate in bad faith?
Why the fuck are we been a punch bag for every fucker can’t the eu wait until we have a better more no actual human leadership.
I wish i could just bury my head in the sand, shake my arse, pull my head out and everything be a magical land of leaders who care, a justice system that actually fucking provides justice and people who pull the sticks out their arses and can respect other people including the minorities.
Boris just wants to fight Brexit again. This has everything to do with a gullible domestic audience and nothing to do with the EU.
I may be an ignoramus in such high matters but I think it stands out like dogs’ balls that rules established within a bipartisan international agreement would properly constrain and shape internal rules subsequently adopted by either party rather than the other way around.
Otherwise any overarching agreement becomes somewhat pointless and can be properly ignored by BOTH parties.
