Belgium is set to manufacture foam glass for the first time.
Finland-based Foamit, which produces foam glass aggregate for infrastructure and building construction, intends to start a foam glass project in the country.
The company plans to build Belgium’s first foam glass manufacturing plant, with an annual production capacity of 240,000m³.
The company signed a letter of intent for a sustainable joint venture with Sterhoek, part of Belgian waste treatment and soil exploitation conglomerate H20 Group.
The plant will be built at a Sterhoek site within the Port of Antwerp.
Foamit plans for the project to strengthen the company’s growth in Belgium and beyond, while reinforcing its circular economy focus.
The company converts recycled glass and industrial side streams into products for construction and infrastructure, as well as glass fractions for packaging and other industries.
The production of foam glass uses waste glass, which is sometimes unsuitable for direct use in glass packaging.
