The number of people living in Cheshire in receipt of Home Office asylum support fell this year.
A total of 2,023 people living in the county were in receipt of asylum support in March this year. That’s down from 2,320 in March 2025.
It works out as just 0.2% of the population in the county. A total of 186 people receiving support were being home in hotels across Cheshire.
Most of those were in Warrington (126) and the rest (60) were in Cheshire East. There are also 2,160 people living in Cheshire as part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme, and another 272 as part of the Afghan Resettlement Scheme.
The UK’s net migration has fallen to 171,000 in the year to December 2025. It’s less than half the amount at the same time in 2024, and drastically down from the peak of almost a million back in 2023.
In fact, net migration is now at its lowest levels since 2012, excluding the pandemic. The number of Brits leaving the country continues to increase, however.
The UK had a net loss of 136,000 British nationals in the year to December. That’s up from a net loss of 117,000 in 2024 and a loss of 80,000 in 2012 when overall net migration was last as low as it is now.
