The 2nd Atomic age (The Dave McWilliams Podcast)

  1. Not a big surprise to hear our energy planning is eh, fast and loose to say say the least.

What the guest has to say about the Green Party is interesting though – a lot of people seem to think they’re essentially harmless and because of that give them a 1st/2nd preference in elections, but what is becoming increasingly clear is that their intransigence and dogmatic opposition to scientific evidence is actually doing very real harm to the cause they’re supposedly championing.

  2. We have extension leads from France and the UK for nuclear.

Madness to be spending gazillions on nuclear for five million souls.

  3. Issue with even the smallest modular nuclear reactors here is that they would be too large a component of our electricity system. So even 1x 500mw system would be like 10% of our demand load.

You can check it live on the eirgrid dashboard – recommend googling. It’s fairly interesting.

So in Ireland we’ need to install 2x modular reactors and have one as a backup. And done get me wrong they’re much cheaper than a full scale plant but probably looking like 1bn project. And with our planning system the way it is I do t have a warm feeling in my tummy.

P.S. Regarding the future energy demand – all European countries are required to model this. Usually the model is available to view by Joe public. Ours is an interactive model available at http://www.ireland2050.ie:81/pathways/1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111/primary_energy_chart/comparator/1011111111111110111111001111100111101101101110110111

Gives you a good sense of how fucked we are – even if we make drastic changes now.
