MACUNGIE, Pa. – A contractor struck an underground gas line Tuesday afternoon, triggering a leak and prompting temporary evacuations in a Macungie neighborhood.
UGI spokesperson John Mason tells 69 News the crew — not affiliated with UGI — was digging near 2074 Rolling Meadow Road around 3 p.m. when they hit the line.
As a safety precaution, UGI shut off natural gas to the road, and electricity was also cut, which Mason says is standard procedure during a gas leak.
UGI says about 20 customers were affected, and 10 to 11 residents were evacuated while crews worked to secure the area.
By 7 p.m., all residents had been cleared to return home and power was restored, though repair work on the damaged line continued into the evening.
