Hold on- a looming recession and she wants to go solo now?
Wasn’t there a referendum on this exact thing in 2014? I don’t care one way or the other because I don’t really have a dog in this fight. A couple of my friends are Scottish and have mixed views on the topic. That being said, I imagine that must be really difficult to attract outside investment into a region whose economic future is in turmoil every 10 years or so.
The more economically pragmatic of them realises that when the Bank of England undoubtedly decides that the sterling can only be used in countries that it has jurisdiction over (namely Northern Ireland, Wales and England) , the Scottish economy will tank. Their main natural resource is oil, a commodity whose value will decrease sharply over the coming decades.
The Scottish budget has a deficit of about 36 billion, that is effectively bankrolled by Westminster, the same way that Northern Ireland’s 15 billion deficit is covered by Westminster.
How do the Independence hawk’s in both countries propose to cover these costs??
If economic predictions are to be believed, the world is heading into a recession in the not too distant future. Is now the best time to be rocking the boat and holding a referendum?
Celtic Union of Ireland & Scotland when?
Mel Gibson said you can take our lives but you’ll never take our freedom
What happens if it goes ahead and wins, but Westminster still don’t allow it. Can Boris just say it doesn’t count?
Best of luck Niccy
Scots will never leave the UK. They won’t be let.
Does she have a plan on what she intends to do if she wins? It seems like a major mistake not to have one especially after seeing what happened with Brexit. I don’t think that Scotland (or Northern Ireland) should vote for independence without a clear plan for health, education, international relations, infrastructure, etc.
