  1. “The CPS is committed to delivering justice for the victims of rape and sexual assault. We want every victim to have the confidence that their case will be fully investigated by the police and that, in every case where our legal tests are met, the Crown Prosecution Service will charge and prosecute”

This is an overstatement. I recently gave a witness statement for a case of sexual abuse in a school. Only one of two victims was willing to make a statement, but even so, the evidence was quite strong and CPS conceded that a conviction was likely because there was an independent witness (me). However, despite excellent work by the police the CPS declined to prosecute not just once but twice.

The reason I guess is that there are just too many such cases. The CPS devotes attention to the freshest and most heinous. The “legal test” that it refers to in the above quotation is whether prosecution is in the “public interest”, in other words, whether the cost of a trial can be met by the budget.

  2. You know there is a theme running thru all of this. An old ancient discredited theme that women and children are property to be done with as one sees fit. Patriarchy is alive and well and hurting people.

We can go on as we always have, or we can change.
