CHOCOWINITY, N.C. (WITN) – A vehicle crash has left more than 850 people without power in the Chocowinity and surrounding Beaufort County area.
Duke Energy’s outage map says it was caused by a vehicle damaging their equipment around 4:06 p.m.
Beaufort County Emergency Services Director Chris Newkirk says they did not respond to the situation, but they did receive the initial dispatch to Highway 33 and Carrow Road.
The call came in as a single car accident where a car had hit a light pole.
Newkirk says the dispatch said everyone inside the vehicle had gotten out, which is why they did not respond.
When first responders arrived, they reported that the vehicle had major damage, and that a pole and transformer was damaged, Newkirk said.
WITN has reached out to highway patrol and Duke Energy to learn more about the situation.
Duke’s outage map shows 864 customers without power. It estimates that it will be restored by 11:30 p.m.
