The Italian Coast Guard announced on Sunday that rescue teams had recovered 10 bodies after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Malta following its departure from Libya.
In a statement cited by Reuters, the coast guard said the vessel had left Libya carrying around 60 people before overturning approximately 45 nautical miles southeast of Malta.
According to the latest information, a fishing boat operating in the area rescued about 48 survivors from among the roughly 60 people believed to have been on board when the vessel departed.
The statement added that the Italian Coast Guard immediately dispatched a patrol boat to the scene and recovered 10 bodies. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing in coordination with Maltese authorities.
