AN SNP MP who claimed that Scots don’t want a probe into the Peter Murrell scandal has been told to “put country before party”.
Dave Doogan, the party’s new Westminster leader, finally broke his silence yesterday on Scottish Affairs Committee plans to launch an inquiry.
He claimed the SNP’s lacklustre win in the Holyrood election shows that voters don’t care about Operation Branchform. But Murrell pleaded guilty to embezzlement three weeks after the vote.
With John Swinney refusing to support a probe being held at Holyod, that leaves it up to Scottish MPs to get to the bottom of the scandal.
The Scottish Affairs Committee is due to meet today and it is understood all the other members back a probe. Mr Doogan cannot block the move but he complained bitterly yesterday that it would be a “party political stunt”.
The Angus MP said: “If this inquiry goes ahead as suggested, it would be an unprecedented abuse of the House of Commons committee system — and a complete waste of taxpayers’ money.
“The SNP will call this party political stunt out for exactly what it is — a desperate attempt by Labour Party and Tory MPs to weaponise a taxpayer-funded Westminster committee to take pot shots at their political opponents.”
