LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Rep. Henry Cuellar voted no on a $70 billion immigration-enforcement package that passed the House June 9, warning it hands the Department of Homeland Security too much money with too little oversight.
House Republicans sent the bill to President Donald Trump’s desk, ending a monthslong fight inside their own party.
The bill will fully fund the Department of Homeland Security for the rest of Trump’s second term, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The House approved the bill by a 214 to 212 vote, mostly along party lines.
In a statement to KGNS, Cuellar said Congress is now providing more than $260 billion for the Department of Homeland Security without “any oversight or accountability to the American people.”
He said border security programs should be funded through the regular appropriations process so lawmakers can direct money where it’s needed most, hold agencies accountable and give border personnel the confidence to do their jobs.
