LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – The Laredo community will come together to honor six immigrants who died inside a Union Pacific shipping container last month.
The Laredo Immigrant Alliance is hosting a vigil from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, at Frontera Beer and Wine Garden.
Investigators said the group likely died from extreme heat after being loaded into the container in Del Rio and suffering for hours before the train reached Laredo on May 10.
Organizers said the vigil is a chance to reflect and reaffirm a commitment to treating every person with dignity.
“I think the situation brings awareness to the ongoing issues and the need to be more understanding as far as the policies that we have in place,” said Juan Livas, Laredo Immigrant Alliance board member. “Right now, we have policies that lean more towards an economically based policy, so we need to be more humanitarian.”
A seventh person was also found dead near railroad tracks in San Antonio. Investigators believe the death may be connected to the Laredo case.
Federal investigators, including Homeland Security and Border Patrol, are now leading the case. No arrests have been confirmed in connection with the deaths.
