UK Government turns focus to electric motorcycles after car grant scheme axed

  1. This seems OK as opposed to cutting it entirely. EV PTW vehicles are still nascent and could do with the support.

Not only do they cut emissions in towns & cities, but they also reduce congestion. Maybe not as good as a pushbike, but not everyone can ride one of those.

The PTW sector does seem to have a minor issue though. There are the ultra expensive crotch rockets and the bargain bin plastic fantastics, but the entire middle seems to be missing.

  2. While any and all incentives to reduce fossil fuel consumption should be strongly encouraged and applauded, I feel that this is a step backwards by removing any driver (no pun intended) for a family or rural motorist to make the switch away from ICE vehicles. Frankly, electric motorcycles are not suitable for a large number of the population outside of urban/suburban locations, where range, practicality and infrastructure are a completely different kettle of fish.

  3. I would 100% use an ebike if my energy and initial purchase was subsidised. Can’t afford the £2k price tag on a lot of the bottom end models though.

Even push bikes have gone through the roof so wtf are you meant to do lmao

  4. I used to own one of those electric mopeds when I lived in China. They were a main form of transportation in most cities and they were accommodated well. With such a big difference In infrastructure and attitudes between the two countries it would be really difficult to predict how they would be rolled out here. I expect a small number of people would just buy them instead of a 50cc. Mine cost me about £250 I think. If I started to run out of charge there were charging points that you could scan to pay for. Some people brought them into their flats to charge which was incredibly dangerous due to the regulations on their safety. It was basically a huge fire risk for the other 500 or so people who lived there and the batteries could explode while charging. There were also mechanics everywhere who would repair them for basically nothing.

The ones that are sold here would likely face proper regulations so they’d be safer. A few of the bikes I looked at that cost around £1500 out there were going for £5000 here. I think Suron was one of the brands that had a markup like that and Super Soco. I’ve already seen a few dickheads riding them about here pulling wheelies and speeding down alleys.
