Sungrow and Sunotec have commissioned a 150 MW/600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Nova Zagora, Bulgaria, marking one of the country’s largest energy storage projects and a significant step in Southeast Europe’s energy transition.
The project has been developed and is owned by Enery, while financing was secured through Bulgaria’s national RESTORE programme administered by the Ministry of Energy.
The facility deploys Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled battery storage technology.
The Nova Zagora installation represents the first major achievement under a broader energy storage partnership announced by Sungrow and Sunotec at the 2025 Intersolar exhibition. The collaboration initially targets up to 800 MWh of battery storage capacity in the Nova Zagora region, with plans currently being evaluated to expand the programme to as much as 1 GWh.
The project is also among the first utility-scale standalone battery storage facilities in Bulgaria to fully comply with national grid requirements.
3 GWh Storage Pipeline Planned By End-2026
The Nova Zagora facility forms part of a much larger battery storage pipeline being developed jointly by Sungrow and Sunotec across Bulgaria.
Over the next two months, the partners plan to bring an additional 2.2 GWh of battery storage capacity online. By the end of 2026, total commissioned capacity under the programme is expected to reach 3 GWh.
Among the upcoming developments is the Knizhnovik Phase 1 project, a hybrid solar-plus-storage facility being developed by Enery with a planned capacity of 100 MW/200 MWh.
The partners said the phased rollout of 3 GWh of battery storage capacity will contribute significantly to renewable energy integration and grid stability across the region.
PowerTitan 2.0 Technology Supports Grid Stability
The Nova Zagora project uses Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage platform, which is designed to optimise land utilisation while enabling faster deployment.
The system incorporates advanced thermal management technology to maintain stable operating temperatures, improve efficiency, and enhance safety. Sungrow said the platform has already been deployed across multiple European markets and has demonstrated reliable performance under a variety of grid and operating conditions.
Sungrow, which has been active in renewable energy technology for nearly three decades, reported more than 1,000 GW of installed power electronic converters globally as of December 2025.
