Forcing someone to fully cover itself is pretty much the same as forcing someone to wear more revealing clothes. From the other side you must wear headscarf in Saudi Arabia and they say it is their tradition and culture, so France might argue the same. Their country their rules.
The mayor openly challenged laïcité to the benefit of organised religion. I don’t know what he was expecting to be honest
France belongs to the french and will remain that way. Adapt or move elsewhere
