The European Union’s 27 ambassadors gave the green light on Friday for membership talks with Ukraine and Moldova, starting Monday. Despite Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is prioritizing EU membership to solidify Ukraine’s position in Europe.
Zelenskiy expressed gratitude on Telegram, acknowledging the EU’s significant step and congratulating Moldova on this progress. He emphasized the EU’s support as vital political and moral backing for Ukraine and its citizens.
While both countries are set to negotiate the first cluster of policy reforms necessary for accession, the EU’s decision represents acknowledgment of their commitment, even amid adversities. The move follows Hungary’s previous opposition, which has since been resolved, allowing talks to commence.
