I never heard this before, DUP MLA Jim Wells in 2021 saying they(DUP) hoped the border, resulting from the protocol, would go between Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland, instead of in the Irish Sea from ireland

  1. Of course they did. That’s why they were hard brexit’s biggest supporters. And now it’s backfired on them.

    But for some reason no-one in the media ever straight up says this to them or their Tory organ grinders.

  2. Happy to hear that being asked – it’s something I haven’t heard asked of them, particularly now when they’re complaining about the NIP. Did they think the EU would just capitulate, or the border would be re-established with the south? Well, this answers that question!

    I’d have some sympathy with Unionists over the sea border, if it hadn’t been the result of their own actions. There was an option on the table that would have avoided the need for either border and they helped scupper it; now they’re crying over the inevitable alternative.

  3. The whole reason they campaigned for Brexit was to try to put distance between NI and ROI, so as you say this is not a surprise but it’s nice to hear them admit it.

  4. It’s the only reason the nasty pricks voted for Brexit. Wonderful to watch it spectacularly backfiring on the odious bigots.
