TOWN OF HOUNSFIELD, New York (WWNY) – Old McDonald’s Farm to many is an old nursery rhyme, but to folks in Sackets Harbor, it’s so much more.
“I used to come here when I was a kid and it’s been such a cool place to see grow into the big operation that it is,” said Justin Crandall, a guest to the farm.
And grow it has, as Old McDonald’s Farm in Sackets Harbor celebrates forty years of operation.
“We have 200 animals, you can take a hay ride, we have bounce pads, we have mini golf, kids zip line, gravity wagon basketball,” said Julia Robbins-Ledoux, co-owner of the farm. “You can feed the goats, we have mini highland cows and in the fall we do a corn maze and pumpkin patch.”
Robbins-Ledoux’s mom started the farm when she was four. Since then they’ve prided themselves as a staple of the community, all while staying family run.
“So, we’re a mother daughter, women owned business,” said Robbins-Ledoux. “We mostly have women that work here too. A lot of teenagers and some retired women that drive tractor for us.”
“I’ve been around the farm pretty much my whole life growing up in Sackets [Harbor],” said Crandall. “It’s really cool that this place has been able to be up and running for this long. We’re privileged to be here and there’s so many opportunities for our kids to have fun and see some animals. We’re just excited to be out, it’s a beautiful day.”
“Nothing but good things to say, it genuinely is a staple,” said Crandall’s wife, Cassandra. “It means a lot and it’s great. We’ll always keep coming back and we’ll always keep recommending it.”
While Robbins-Ledoux grateful for their history, she’s also looking forward to the future.
“We’re hoping for 40 more,” she said. “People will often see the next generation of Old McDonald’s Farm here around the farm. My nieces and nephews and my daughter are aways here on the weekends. They’ll be here all summer. So we’re hoping that that 3rd generation of Old McDonalds Farm will want to come into business with us as well.”
