Didn’t know the difference between Flanders and Wallonie was so big.
Since you can drive 90 on a twisty Ardenne road at night with no street lights, I’m not surprised. Add to that the lag in road maintenance and you have these results. Also A lot of trucks and cars transit through Belgium to other EU countries.
The Dutch always complain about our “Belgian” roads but in fact, they are complaining about the Walloon road quality since some travel with their “sleep hut” to France through Wallonia.
Damn even here we’re split.
4 options:
1) Walen can’t drive (classic Vlaming joke)
2) The roads are tricky
3) They drive older & less safe cars because the taxes for registrating a brand new car are higher over there
4) Probably a mix of all of the above

Here a comparison between 2019/2020 and some more data at regional level, there are also the numbers by province without scalling
The title is misleading as neither Norway nor Switzerland are in the EU.
Switching from dark France roads to Belgian roads, makes eyes blind.
