Allied troops will practice coordinated infantry operations and rapid response tactics to improve defense of the narrow land link between the Baltic states and the EU.
Lithuania, Poland and France, from June 16 to 26, will conduct near the Suwałki Corridor military exercises “Brave Boar,” during which they will practice joint infantry operations.
According to LRT, Lithuania’s participation in the exercises will be provided by the Mechanized Dragoon Battalion of Grand Duke Butigeidis of Lithuania and the Žemaitija Infantry Brigade.
During the maneuvers, the troops will practice joint operations, coordinate allied actions, and sharpen the skills needed to ensure the defense of the Suwałki Corridor.
It is noted that the narrow isthmus between Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation and Belarus, less than 100 km long, has important strategic significance for NATO and the EU, as it connects the Baltic states with EU territory.
Prospects for defense facilities near the isthmus
In April, the Lithuanian Parliament approved the construction of a military training range near the isthmus. It is expected that works will be completed by 2028, and on the corresponding site there will be capacity to accommodate up to 4,000 troops. Such steps underscore the commitment to bolster the region’s defense and stability within NATO.
Such actions demonstrate the allies’ focus on strengthening the region’s defense capabilities and supporting security within the Alliance, taking into account the growing challenges in the region.
