Rwanda deportation plan: First flight taking asylum seekers to African country can go ahead, says Court of Appeal

  1. As someone who speaks with asylum seekers most days as part of my work, absolutely heartbreaking to see this.

These are people who have been through absolutely unimaginably traumatic circumstances and made a terrifying journey to escape and reach a country where they thought they’d be safe. Now many of them are going to be deported to Rwanda.

It makes absolutely no sense economically, morally, and almost certainly won’t act as a deterent.

  2. The racists heads will explode if they can read section 16 of the Rwanda agreement it’s pretty pointless when we are going to get Rwanda refugees coming to this country

16.1 The Participants will make arrangements for the United Kingdom to resettle a portion of Rwanda’s most vulnerable refugees in the United Kingdom, recognising both Participants’ commitment towards providing better international protection for refugees.

  3. Honestly non sensical on all levels but Self preservation done with the lowest effort possible.

Who thought sending refugees into a country on q continent which is a refugee origin hotspot… On a continent soon to explode with refugee crisis due to the starvation wave….

It’s like “hell yeah let’s keep putting fire out with oil”.

  4. For those that support this Rwanda plan, do you think that there will be any change in focus at all to “helping our own”?

Cause with this government they’ll certainly be funnelling more money in to their own pockets to get these poor people to Rwanda and I doubt there will be anything but cuts for people in need.

  5. Rwanda is a quite safe country these days? It may not be where they thought they’d end up, but surely if they are fleeing war, persecution and repression, it’s a chance for a new, safe life. If a refugee is desperate not to go to Rwanda it makes me think that they were not running for their lives, but running for a new life in Britain specifically.

  6. * The UK government has itself criticised Rwanda, recently, for violating basic rights. Rwanda had a genocide fairly recently.
    * Rwanda is a long way from where some of the refugees come from and a long way from where they were trying to get to.
    * The policy is likely to have racist, or racist-appeasing, motivation – compare the treatment of (or at least rhetoric about) fleeing Ukrainians.
    * Packing refugees (and similar) off to another country puts them out of sight in a way that makes it easier to really abuse them.

That last point is not hyperbolic. For, refugees and asylum seeking are demonised, lack state protection and somewhat expensive. Thus, they are prime targets for being killed by any really nasty or really callous regime.

  7. There are no adequate words for how disgusting the Tory strangle has been on the bloated corpse of our democracy. We are all responsible for stopping this now.

  8. What’s to stop anyone who does actually end up getting sent to Rwanda from just leaving Rwanda and trying to head straight back across the Med to Calais to try to get into Britain again?

  9. Rwanda is no worse than Turkey and plenty of migrants and refugees remain there… plus I genuinely can’t think of a legal reason (I studied English Law) for this to not go ahead?

  10. Massive compensation payouts for all the refugees involved in 2 years, huge amounts of wasted cash for a badly judged political stunt.

  11. The left only focuses on the injustice in one direction, I think this is why it plays well for Tories. Hotels, funded by government money, are literally providing free rent, heating and food to thousands of asylum seekers in the middle of an inflation crisis where many Brits can’t afford to turn on their radiators. When you consider they can also easily work tax free, illegally, because their other migrant mates have set up businesses which skirt employment rules you basically have a better standard of living than many legal citizens do. It’s absolutely backwards.

  12. I’m so fucking sick and tired of this government.
This feels like such a shocking moment it makes me feel physically sick.

How the fuck can people be okay with this? I’m so angry.
