The interesting point is that Cadwalladr’s public interest reporting defence succeeded up until the Electoral Commission published a statement in April 2020. It then ceased to apply, but the court found that no serious harm to Banks’s reputation was caused by the continuing publication of the talk after that point and so it was (by section 1(1) of the Defamation Act 2013) not defamatory after that point.
Victory for Carole, the Graun & Observer and freedom of the press.
I would suggest you all actually read the judgement. It amounted to Banks couldn’t prove damage to his reputation.
The judge did rule that what she said was libellous but her defence that she thought it true at the time, despite no evidence is enough apparently.
Sketchy precedence to set in my opinion, but your various biases may affect your thoughts on that.
I’m very relieved for Carole.
Wonder how many bots will be out on Twitter supporting Arron Banks? I would have thought they’ll all be busy being deployed for Ukrainian war duties.
Does anyone know what happened to all the Twitter DMs? There used to be websites hosting them all.
ELI5; does this mean Banks *does* have a Russia connection?
cracking news!
This is a good result, but she didn’t win on the basis of “truth”. He was investigated and nothing was “found”.
So really interested to hear what do we actually have on Arron Banks (who I feel sure is a slimy toad) – is he a criminal and is there evidence?
I was worried he would win and I’m now wondering if its due to the Russian connection he did not win as Russia V Ukraine is ongoing.
Glad It has went they way it has.
Brilliant news. Piggy Banks is a fat piece of shit. Hope he appeals and loses that too. And I hope he reads this, stupid fat cunt.
Reporter “Carole Cadwalladr” lol. It’s like… No, it’s the exact same as when they call “Tommy Robinson” a reporter…
Well it may be cold & damp outside where I am but that put a smile on my face!
Great news! Fuck Aaron Banks and fuck his master Vladimir Putin
Amazing news! This was so important.
Thought the headline was gonna read Carol baskin
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Have I read this right – he lost, not because what was said was true, but because he’s such a notorious shithouse that it wouldn’t harm his reputation or standing?
Crazy cat lady can carry on spewing her middle class drivel, a victory for free speech! ( I mean that, sorry it sounded ironic).

This is absolutely fantastic news. Arron Banks or anyone else shouldn’t just be able to silence journalists by swinging their wallets around.
YESSSSS
Excellent! We and the wife will be toasting CC tonight, it just goes to show that you should never let a mental impairment hold you back

Fuck you Aaron Banks!
I hope he’s denied any appeal. Probably not, though.
