‘Quite a few have given up’: fish and chip shops battered by rising costs

  1. Funny how this used to be a poor man’s tea back in my day, I remember cod n chips in the late 70s was 48p, this was 28p for a medium cod and 20p for the chips.

The local fish shop to me is now on the £9 mark for cod n chips, and this was £7 at Xmas, they still do a lunchtime special of cod n chips for £6 which ain’t bad but it’ll soon by over a tenner for your poor man’s tea.

  2. I don’t really understand how, given the profit margins must be pretty big on chips (I appreciate its less on fish)

  3. Gave my local another chance today. Big regret. Outrageously expensive for what is very very basic food. And I had Hake instead of cod.

How can it cost as much as an Indian takeaway?

  4. I genuinely couldn’t say the last time I’d eaten fish and chips, it’s rank

But people like it and I want local business to survive so if you likenit eat it

  5. Can’t they reuse the oil for more than a day or three? Do they need to change oil daily?

  6. I’ve noticed the quality and quantity of fish served going down in local chippies lately. More batter and hot grease than fish, really chewy, not really pleasant to eat at all. Or maybe I’ve just been unlucky. Either way, I’m definitely steering clear of some of them until either their prices go down or their food quality goes up.

  7. You guys are lucky … I aint got a fish and chip shop for 2000 miles. Having said that, a small price to pay. But yea, I’d pay a small fortune for a really good fish and chips (got to be in proper dripping), oh and mushy peas. Jeez. You got me craving!

  8. My girlfriend works at Bizzie Lizzie’s chippy in Skipton. The plaice ( 🐟) is busier than ever.

  9. You have to admit though, there are a lot of terrible fish and chip shops out there that serve greasy mushy chips, and fish that the batter is less crispy than a used dish sponge.

  10. Not surprising as everything is costing more and supplies are seeming to get harder to get for some businesses. That and not many people fancy paying more then a tenner for fish and chips.
