Leo Varadkar, probably.
I said we’d be in this fuck up in 2012. I recon by 2030 – 2035 we’ll be the complete opposite again. Over built and recession. They’ll push like hell to get loads of houses built and they’ll get it going, but that juggernaut won’t stop when ya want it to and the same shit will happen again.
There was no money to build houses from 07 until 2015
How has it not picked up the last 10 years?!
One of the reasons we have a housing crisis is because we had a housing oversupply for about 5 years. A period during which you could buy a second hand house for less than it cost to build (if you could find a bank that had money to lend). There were absolutely no housing estates being built, just a few one off houses.
I purchased a house in 2014. I had the pick of the town as there were so few houses being sold at the time.
You can’t underestimate the damage that 5 year period did to the construction industry. So many lads retrained for tech jobs and other industries. I’m working with a few that would never consider going back into construction. It was always going to be a slow process bootstrapping the whole industry when it take 3/4 years to qualify.
We used to build things in this country.
I remember when that decision was made, the state looked at priorities and housing wasn’t one of them… When you think of all the things we cut back on, housing seems like something that’s essential for a growing population.
I guess the lesson is about politicians, never leave big decisions in the hands of people who’s entire life experience is dropping out of teaching etc after a year to take a Dail seat, or dropping out of medical school half way through for the same, these types haven’t made anything of their lives , and you want them to guide a country… are we crazy. We need long term successful people getting interested in politics, cos our talent pool is shallow AF
Loots like staffing numbers for Dublin airport. Just goes to prove ireland is incapable of any long term planning. The population was both very young and growing, where did the government expect them to live.
