PGB completes expansion of Dzierżki biogas plant in Poland

Polska Grupa Biogazowa (PGB) has completed the expansion and modernisation of its biogas facility in Dzierżki, Podlaskie, bringing total installed capacity to 1.498 MWe electrical and 1.621 MWt thermal.

Annual electricity generation at the site is projected to reach 12,466 MWh, with heat output of 13,489 MWhth.

Infrastructure upgrades include an expanded biogas treatment station, a new engine room, a high-capacity flare and a 13,500 cubic metre monolithic reinforced concrete digestate tank, described as one of the largest of its kind in Poland.

The project also includes a direct heat supply connection to a neighbouring pig farmer, who will receive up to 3,500 GJ of heat annually.

Founded in 2007, PGB operates 21 biogas plants across Poland with a combined annual output of 500 GWh of electricity and heat, representing an estimated 15% share of the Polish biogas market.

Circularity Fuels has completed what it claims is the world’s first end-to-end conversion of raw agricultural biogas into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), following a six-month pilot at a dairy farm near Madera, California. The pilot drew biogas directly from the farm’s manure digester — without prior CO2 removal — and produced drop-in jet fuel meeting…

Ireland’s Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) has published a decision paper updating the country’s biomethane connections policy, introducing changes designed to reduce the cost of connecting anaerobic digestion plants to the gas network and support the national target of 5.7 TWh of indigenously produced biomethane by 2030. The most significant change is an extension…

Capsol Technologies has been awarded a feasibility study by E.ON to evaluate carbon capture solutions at the company’s biomass and waste-to-energy operations in Norrköping, Sweden. The study will assess deployment of Capsol’s carbon capture technology at a facility with a potential capture capacity of up to 500,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. It was secured…

South Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment is launching a 36.6 billion won (approximately $27.5 million) programme to localise key technologies for biogas power generation systems, reducing reliance on imported generators and components as the country’s biogas market expands. The funding — comprising 26 billion won from the national budget and 10.6 billion won…

British Columbia’s Utilities Commission (BCUC) has concluded that no major changes to its definition of renewable natural gas (RNG) are warranted, following an inquiry into whether existing rules adequately account for greenhouse gas reductions from biomethane purchased outside the province. The final report, published on 26 May 2026, confirms that public utilities may continue to…

Mexico’s energy ministry SENER is developing a comprehensive regulatory framework for the country’s biomethane sector, including a new Official Mexican Standard (NOM) covering quality specifications, grid injection protocols and supply chain traceability. The framework was outlined publicly for the first time by Enrique Contreras, SENER’s Subdirector of Biofuels, during the VI National Biogas Technical Forum….

Researchers at the University of Reading are leading a major European initiative to help farmers and foresters produce plant biomass more sustainably without further degrading already fragile soils. The SOILBIOMASS+ project will bring together researchers, farmers, foresters, land managers, industry and policymakers to address a core tension in Europe’s bioeconomy: how to meet growing demand…

The number of American dairy farms capturing energy from manure has nearly tripled since the end of 2020, according to new data from the American Biogas Council (ABC). There are now 496 dairy farms using anaerobic digestion to convert manure into renewable natural gas (RNG) or electricity, processing manure from approximately 2.5 million cows and…

Germany’s Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) has awarded contracts to 388 projects with a combined capacity of 491 MW in its latest biomass auction, though the tender was undersubscribed against a target of 727 MW. A total of 494 proposals representing 637 MW were submitted, but 29 were excluded from the process. Because admitted bids fell…

Ahlstrom has signed multiyear biomethane supply agreements with two Italian energy producers, covering seven production plants and marking one of the largest direct producer-to-industrial-user deals of its kind in the country. The fibre-based specialty materials manufacturer will use the biomethane as a drop-in replacement for fossil natural gas at its Italian sites, requiring no major…
