In June 2022, months after he agreed an out-of-court settlement with Virginia Giuffre, his sexual abuse accuser, who died in 2025, he was banned from appearing in public alongside senior members of the family.
This followed an 11th-hour intervention by the now King and Prince of Wales, who ordered him to remain behind palace walls. It was such a last-minute change that the order of service had been printed with the former Duke’s position in the procession.
On Monday, the King, accompanied by the Queen, also in the order’s full regalia having been created a Royal Companion in 2021, led the procession as it snaked its way down the hill from the castle’s State Apartments to St George’s Chapel.
