Top Democrat proposes crushing sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine

  1. Menendez’s proposal was introduced late Thursday night as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, a must-pass defense-spending bill on which the Senate will vote after the Thanksgiving break.

    – It would require President Biden to impose sanctions and visa bans against top Russian military and intelligence officials engaged in planning or executing an invasion of Ukraine, and authorizes additional military assistance to Kyiv.

    – The amendment also calls for sanctions against Russian banks, state-owned enterprises, and the critical oil, gas and mineral sectors. It would ban primary and secondary sovereign debt transactions, which would deal a major blow to the Russian economy.

    – The intrigue: The amendment would sanction any company or corporate officer involved in planning or operating Nord Stream 2, a pending natural gas pipeline that will allow Russia to circumvent Ukraine and deliver energy directly to Europe via Germany.

  2. Remember in WW2 when Roosevelt wanted to sanction Japan for bombing Pearl Harbour. No, me neither.

  3. They impose crushing sanctions every year, but Russia still stays afloat just because it has great customers in germany and other parts of Europe. As soon as gas starts going through NS2, those sanctions wont mean shit. Its basically NATO fighting against NATO. The US and EU have to sanction Germany as well, since Germany is just as complicit in destabilizing the eastern block. If anything the EU has to sanction the fuck outa Germany. The eastern block countries have to come together and use their influence to push for sanction and not let Germans turn this problem into if you dont like it then leave the EU as they always do.

  4. “Crushing”… US sanctions won’t do shit. I’m usually against these “that’s just hot air” comments, but in this case, it’s actually a farce.

[The EU is Russia’s biggest trade partner](https://ec.europa.eu/trade/policy/countries-and-regions/countries/russia/) and accounts for ~40% of Russian trade in goods and services or >$270 billion pre covid compared to the ~$35 billion the US trades with Russia.

US sanctions on Russia never worked. EU sanctions bite. But EU sanctions are already at a high level and pushing Russia closer to China economically every year. What would help would be a military presence in Ukraine by US & EU or at the very least heavy material support (which is thankfully already delivered). Russia will moan and whine and pretend it’s an aggression, but they won’t actually do it.

  5. I think usa should realize..sanctions does not work to stop the countries..no one cares except eu countries..Russia..china..turkey..n korea..venezuela..iran..they dont careeeee…
