KI SAWYER, Mich. (WLUC) – Nine U.P. delegates are on their way to Marquette’s sister city in Finland. Those delegates met at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport ahead of their flight, giving the public a chance to visit with them before they left.
The group has a 14-hour flight ahead of them and will reach Kajaani, Finland, on Wednesday afternoon. One delegate and board member says that when you visit Finland, you might find that some cultural stereotypes are wrong.
“You hear about the taciturn and quiet Finns, and I have not found that to be the case in Kajaani; they are the most friendly, warm, and enjoyable people that you could want to meet,” Marquette Sister Cities Board Member and Delegate Martin Eskelinen said.
The delegates will return from Finland on June 26. Seven delegates from Marquette’s sister city, Higashiomi, Japan, will visit Marquette in July.
