Princess Catherine and Duchess Sophie’s close friendship was on full display during this year’s Order of the Garter ceremony, with royal fans declaring the pair’s bond appears stronger than ever as the monarchy continues to navigate a challenging period.
The annual event, which celebrates the oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain, saw members of the Royal Family gather at Windsor Castle on Monday for a traditional procession to St George’s Chapel.
The Princess of Wales, 44, and the Duchess of Edinburgh, 61, attended alongside their husbands, Prince William and Prince Edward, as well as King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
Catherine turned heads in a bespoke gold dress by Patrick McDowell, paired with a coordinating wide-brimmed Jane Taylor hat and the Robinson Pelham earrings she wore on her wedding day- a gift from her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.
Sophie opted for a floral silk dress by Suzannah London, complemented by a structured Jane Taylor hat, Jimmy Choo heels and a Valextra handbag.
While William and Edward took part in the ceremonial procession as Knights of the Garter, Catherine and Sophie watched from the sidelines together, sharing smiles, conversation and several light-hearted moments that quickly caught the attention of royal fans online.
“Catherine and Sophie showcasing their warm friendship, as they chat in the sunshine,” one X user wrote, while another said: “They’re adorable together. The picture in the carriage of them laughing is my favourite!”
Others noted how the relationship between the two senior royals has evolved over the years, with many describing Sophie as a trusted source of support for Catherine.

The Duchess of Edinburgh joined the Royal Family when she married Queen Elizabeth II’s youngest son, Prince Edward, in June 1999.
More than a decade later, Catherine entered royal life following her marriage to Prince William in April 2011.
Over the years, Sophie has frequently been described by royal commentators as one of Catherine’s closest confidantes within the family.
Having successfully navigated the transition from private citizen to working royal herself, Sophie is said to have offered valuable guidance and support as Catherine adjusted to life in the public spotlight.
Their friendship has become increasingly visible in recent years, particularly during major royal events, where they are often seen sharing private conversations and moments of laughter away from the formalities.
Reports have also suggested that both women made efforts to help fellow commoner Meghan Markle adjust to royal life after she began dating Prince Harry in 2017.
According to royal author Russell Myers’ book William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story, they “had attempted to assist Meghan as she assimilated into royal life, but their ‘repeated attempts’ were not responded to.”
In the years since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020, the pool of senior working royals has shrunk significantly, prompting Catherine and Sophie to take on increasingly prominent roles within the monarchy.
The pair are also understood to have remained firmly aligned when it comes to the Royal Family’s handling of ex-Prince Andrew, whose public fall from grace has continued to cast a shadow over the institution.
Following the fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein files, which detailed the extent of Andrew’s relationship with the convicted paedophile, the Duke of York was stripped of his royal titles and patronages and largely removed from public life.
While King Charles III removed Andrew’s remaining official royal roles, including his membership of the Order of the Garter and his title as Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, he has allowed his younger brother to continue living at Marsh Farm on the Sandringham estate.
Prince William, on the other hand, reportedly holds a highly unfavourable opinion of the former Duke of York, viewing him as a detriment to the monarchy.
