So my language school has this online oral practice course. The teacher started talking about safety coffins and parlour games. I remember that in a listening practice, the background music of the dinner party was classical music.

I have never listened to classical music at any party in the United States. Unless they take a course in modern British history at university, people there will never talk about the fear of being buried alive.

I think some Germans unconsciously like the Belle Époque era very much, which shocked me. I did not realize that the social influence of the Belle Époque era still exists and is flourishing in Germany. I think the pomp and circumstance of the German Empire and the prestige and prosperity of new imperialism are still deeply rooted in the collective memory of some Germans.

  1. Erm… what? Germans are under the influence of the Victorian era because they listen to, gasp, classical music or talk about their fears?

What are you smoking? You should take a break.

ETA: u/reallK17, any (relevant) edits should be marked clearly as a courtesy to everyone reading your posts and your own credibility. Just a hint.

  2. > I think the pomp and environment of the Second Reich, the prestige and prosperity of new imperialism are still deeply rooted in the collective memory of Germans.

Your edits aren’t making it better.

I like Renaissance and early Baroque music, which the Victorians mostly ignored because it was “out of date” for them. Please, please analyse me.

  3. So your chain of thought is

A (probably staged and artificial) listening practice exercise has classical music as background and also something about coffins (?)

    leads to

    Classical Music is Victorian

    leads to

the british Victorian Era of all eras is still prevelant in Germany of all places

    because of

The German Empire somehow being also the Victorian Era

    which leads ultimately to

Posh dinner music is the smoking gun Germans have still a deeply rooted taste for imperialism .

Have I .. Have I understood you correctly? I swear I’ve tried and this is the best… *thing* I could come up with after reading your post.

Edit: Wait a minute. It’s the Belle époque now?

I mean, I quite like Jugendstil, not gonna lie. But OP: You stole the reference to “Pomp and Circumstances” from one of my comments, didn’t you?

  4. Me ne versteh’ pas? What?

Classical music and discussing coffins in a listening practice equal imperialistic collective memory?

OP, I think you should stay away from drugs.
