This is just so fucking cruel but I’m not surprised, Tories will take any chance they can get to shit on people while they’re down. Free school meals should be a human right, the correct nutrition is absolutely fundamental to a child’s development too, so this will only push back those from low income families even further. The cost of living crisis means even more people will start falling into poverty too
We were in a really bad place after my dad died (the sole income earner in our family). I got free school meals and it meant my mum had a little bit extra cash in her pocket to pay for things like my brother’s driving lessons to get him working, and our hot water that was broken for ages
It’s just such a basic thing that can really help some people turn things around, give them just a little bit of breathing space. I’ve got an eating disorder and it was absolutely horrible being at school and trying to focus on hours of lessons whilst in pain too. No kid should ever have to go through that
