Fernsehturm, Bastei, and Neuschwanstein in one hour. Now I just need Plönlein for the Quartet!
I don’t know. There are so many fascinating castles and fortresses in Germany with rich and often mystical history and stories attached to them. Yet this fantasy disneyland castle built by a lunatic gets the most attention.
Nice picture though. Is it edited? The lighting gives it a great vibe.
So sad how the real medieval castle Hohenschwangau not even a few miles away gets neglected. Neuschwanstein’s interior is barely finished.
That’s the dreamland we all dream
Yes, it looks nice but I wouldn’t want to go back. Two times I was there and both times it was completely overcrowded with (mostly Asian) tourists on Europe tour. It was filled up to the point where you couldn’t move which I don’t really appreciate. I’d recommend visiting one of the other castles in the area like Lindenhof. Even though still very touristy a much more pleasant experience

I understand that it is very popular with tourists, but as you can already see from the other comments, it is often perceived as a “Disneyland” castle (or outright “kitsch”) in Germany, and for a reason.
Most of all: it is indeed fake: there was never a need to have a castle at this place, nor has it ever been used as such. It is a “designer” castle, to look like an idealized fairy tale castle.
There are many other places that were actually used and designed to be a fortification, that have a long history and endless stories attached to them. This one has nothing of them, except that it was conceived by someone who had gone crazy and blew money that could and should have been used on the people on fancy projects that didn’t benefit anyone (except nowadays the tourist industry).
And of course, it had been copied by the Disney company for the Cinderella castle in Disneyland. And in fact, the Disneyland version is just as “real” as this one.
So, it’s a pass for me. There are great castles in Germany (and beyond), but Neuschwanstein is not one of them.
Went here yesterday, but Marienbrücke was closed!
I’ll be visiting Bavaria in November and I live in Orlando (the city with Disney World) so I’m pretty much obligated to see Neuschwanstein.. but I find medieval castles to be far more interesting. I’ll be visiting the one in Nuremberg but does anyone have any other suggestions?
If your Castle is litt without filter, you know you have the right castle
There are way better castles, check out Burghausen, its way better
2011 story in Der Spiegel about a guy that becomes a guide at the castle and ends up living there. Says he sent himself a postcard from Tunisia addressed only to “the big white castle in Bavaria” and it made it there.

DisneyCastle, Lederhosen, Bratwurscht/Schnitzel, Bier … alles was man über Bayern/Deutschland wissen (gesehen haben) muss … weiter gehts mit der Europatour in 3-5 Tagen

But have you been in Linderhof?
Was there over the weekend. Amazing place.
I’m happy to see the no-filter version. So many pictures of this building have a turquoise sky and neon-green grass. It’s already pretty without the editing.

I hope I can see that in person. Someday.
It’s a pity it was never finished….
