Today Sunday June 21 is the summer solstice.
The 2026 summer solstice occurred in the Northern Hemisphere early this morning, at 1:24 am PDT (08:25 UTC).
Today is the day with the most sunlight (aka ‘longest day’) and the shortest night. Here on the west coast, sunset last night was at 9:19 pm and sunrise this morning was at 5:12 am.
This day marks astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere. For weather forecasting (meteorological) referencing summer starts June 1 (through August 31).
From here, the sun will appear lower in the sky each day until we arrive once again at the winter solstice around the 21st of December (aka the ‘shortest day’ of the year).
The word solstice is derived from the Latin word solstitium, which literally means ‘the Sun stands still’, referring to how the Sun appears to stop or pause over about two days. During the June solstice it reaches its most northerly sunrise and sunset, and its highest path through the sky; at the December solstice it reaches its most southerly sunrise and sunset, and its lowest path through the sky.
In pre-industrial times, this peak of the sun in the sky coincided with growth of flora and fauna in the natural world. Days were warm. Celebrations arose across many cultures to celebrate themes like abundance and vitality.
Literature & culture:
In Shakepeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream People get lost in the woods, encounter some faeries, and generally have an uplifting time. There is music, love and magic.
The sun was revered in Ireland long before the Celts, as evident by several impressive Neolithic sites. Newgrange was built in alignment with the rising solstice sun over 5,000 years ago.
Astrology:
In western astrology, the summer solstice marks the beginning of the Cancer zodiac sign. People born under that sign are considered warm, loving and nurturing with a focus on home, family, emotional security and self-care.

Cancer is a cardinal sign — pushing things forward. The start of Cancer at the summer solstice is a powerful cosmic checkpoint to reflect on personal growth and make transformative changes.
Cancer is the fourth sign in the zodiac wheel (preceded by Aries, Taurus and Gemini), followed by Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. It represents stability and the ability to absorb change.
Environment and gardens:
Taking care of the environment and connecting with nature is a natural instinct at this time of year. People with floral or food-growing gardens will be outdoors enjoying them.

Father’s Day:
This year, the summer solstice falls on Father’s Day.
Father’s Day us recognized on the third Sunday of June each year. That seems appropriate that fathers who care for families have a day celebrated at the warmest time of the year.
It’s a great time to acknowledge and celebrate caring fathers and male leadership figures in our society.
