PARAGOULD, Ark. (KAIT) – Knowing CPR could mean the difference between life and death, and one Paragould business is making sure more people have that skill.
Lotus & Crow hosted a CPR certification class Saturday, June 20, open to the public and taught by a certified American Heart Association instructor.
“Anyone who has had an accident or had an emergency, you can double or triple their survival rate just by starting CPR,” said Crystal Oldham, a massage therapy instructor.
Oldham, a massage therapy instructor with Lotus & Crow, a healing arts studio on Linwood Drive, hosted the class, bringing in Lieutenant David Chadwick to lead the certification.
Chadwick is a professional law enforcement instructor and a certified American Heart Association instructor for adult, child, and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) training.
“As a massage therapist, we were originally required to have CPR training, and over the years, that’s not the case anymore. As a business owner and a mom, I think it’s very important, so I started bringing in a CPR instructor,” Oldham said.
The class covered compressions, breathing, and hands-on practice, and includes a written exam and PowerPoint presentation.
Certification comes straight from the American Heart Association, with all materials provided.
For attendee Lindsey Propst, a mom and aspiring teacher, signing up was an easy decision.
“I’m in the process of getting my teaching license, so I was like, it might be good to have. My daughter is in a lot of sports, and we’re traveling a lot, so I thought it was a good thing to have in my pocket if I ever needed it,” Propst said.
Propst said the takeaway is clear, and it’s one she thinks more people should hear.
“I think everyone should take a class at least once just to know the basics,” Propst said.
Oldham holds these classes several times a year.
