Lenny Henry ‘always surprised’ by lack of black and Asian faces at Glastonbury

  1. Is it a bad thing?

I’ve never been to Glastonbury because I don’t care. If most black and Asian people feel the same, it is their prerogative.

  2. He’s surprised that the traditional Glasto audience isn’t interested in watching and listening to US rappers shouting sexist lyrics about violence and disrespecting women?

  3. It’s the same for anything outdoorsy. Anything involving camping or roughing it, which includes festivals like Glastonbury, you see fewer ethnic minorities compared to the general population.

Conversely, the more “luxury” nightclubs, the types with bottle service and sparklers, you get a lot more black/Asian faces than in the general population. Not sure why.

  4. I would be interested to know what Lenny’s expectations are.

Demographics put ‘white’ at 87% of the population.

If you’re from an urban area like Dudley, or watch the TV, this is in no way reflected in what one sees on a daily basis.

A good example is the higher proportion of Afro-Caribbean/black actors receiving screen time compared with those of (south) Asian heritage, despite being a smaller community.

If you want a real surprise, have a look at members of the Cabinet with a Jewish heritage, and compare that to their population percentage

  5. People just like what they like. Any kind of change has to be something that comes from within a community itself, if they want to go they can go

  6. They probably hide up when he comes along, “quick get behind the nearest bush, Lenny might tell us a ‘joke’”.

  7. As long as there’s no bias in allocating tickets I don’t see a problem and let’s be honest Glastonbury isn’t everybody’s cup of tea.

  8. Why isn’t this exactly the outcome you’d expect from a “Multicultural” society? If various demographics are allowed to exercise their personal liberty in accordance with their own free choice and those demographics have differing cultural tastes, surely this is reflective of a free society. What is the desired outcome; round up brown people and forced them to attend by prodding them with pointed sticks? Outlaw any event that proves to popular with the majority demographic?

  9. When I see articles like this, I do kinda wonder where the “black and Asian faces” are going instead! Surely, if Lenny’s observation is correct (and less representation there), BAME people will instead be doing different things on that day? Are there possibly events going on around the country where “white” representation is proportionately low compared to the general population?

Anyway, this is all a load of rubbish to me. As long as there aren’t barriers preventing BAME people from going to Glastonbury, they are in general probably doing *something else* that they enjoy so who gives a fk?!

  10. I’m not aware of any barriers to attending that are higher for non whites, there’s plenty of music events where white people are underrepresented in the crowd. There’s no favouring of white performers as far as I’m aware. Not really sure what the issue is?

  11. It’s not an event for London, he’d probably suprised how few black and Asian people there actually are in the UK

  12. dunno what Glasto lennie went to, but the last one i went to there was a fuck ton of black and other ethnic groups in the crowds.

  13. Lenny, if you want to declare to all of the black people in the UK that they aren’t spending enough money on attending expensive, muddy festivals in the middle of nowhere, please go ahead. I won’t stop you.

  14. Who really gives a shit!

Less black people attend a festival, it’s not racist. The tickets are 1st come 1st serve, usually sold by a computer.

Who cares. Maybe black people don’t want to attend this festival. Its the media trying to cause an issue out of nothing.

If it was the other way around and a white person, there’s more blacks than whites at an event, they would then say it’s racist. Just shut up, stop trying to make a problem out of nothing and enjoy the festival

  15. Lenny, mate, if you’re looking out at a sea of faces, and all you’re seeing/focused on is the colour/race of the individual peoples that are making up the large crowd, maybe you’re the one with a racism problem?

I can’t speak for Lenny and his eyes, but I can see perfectly well myself, and when I’m looking at a large sea of people gathered in a giant crowd such as at a concert or a sports event or whatever, I genuinely go a bit colour blind in the sense that all the different colours presenting themselves to my eyes blur and merge into a sort of mad cacophony of a visual mosaic. I have to really focus hard to make out the race/ethnicity of an individual person in such a large crowd.

  16. I’m not sure it is any more of an issue than the festivals, events and club nights that attract an overwhelmingly BME audience. Different strokes for different folks, and all that.

  17. Lenny Henry is a race grifting tosser. I’m always amazed the media give him the attention he needs to thrive.

  18. I don’t see boatloads of white faces at the Mobo Awards either, I am not sure what his point is?

I think paying a ludicrous amount of money to go see shit jangle jangle indie bands in a field and having your stuff stolen is daft. I imagine a lot of others, irrespective of race, think the same. The fact minorities may not have the economic situation to afford this would be the only point I can think he’s making?

That or he’s somehow accusing the grass they all stand on of racism and denying non-white feet or something mental?

  19. Why do some people see a specific scenario where every race/gender/creed isnt equally represented, and try to make a big deal about it?

    That isnt equality.
