No immediate changes to plans for Cameron Barracks to be used for housing asylum seekers are expected following the announced resignation of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
That’s according to Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire MP Angus MacDonald who believes some early policies from Mr Starmer’s Labour government at Westminster proved costly.

But prior to any changes in cabinet, Mr MacDonald (Lib Dem) doesn’t think there will be any U-turn on proposals for 300 single male asylum seekers to arrive at the Inverness barracks – a plan announced by the UK government several months ago.
“Mr Starmer is an honourable, decent and hard-working man who is respected on the world stage,” Mr MacDonald said.
“But it is a shame for Britain that he had poor political judgement at times and didn’t have the ability to take his colleagues or country with him, with notable missteps early on including winter fuel payments and National Insurance issues for business.”
He expects former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham – who was elected MP for Makerfield last week – to be the next Prime Minister, adding: “But I don’t think there will be any impact on us at all in the short term.”
He believed the earliest anything could change under new leadership would be in September.
