DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – An event at Peace United Church highlighted the stories and lives of refugees and immigrants in the Northland.
The Interfaith Committee for Migrant Justice celebrated its 8th annual World Refugee Day Monday. The day is recognized worldwide and typically occurs on June 20, but the event was moved because of Grandma’s Marathon.

Participants shared songs and messages of hope and courage for asylum seekers and immigrants in the Twin Ports. This year’s event also remembered 50 people who died while in ICE detention centers around the country.
“They are like seeds, all of their hopes and dreams will have a chance to sprout up as long as we keep them present with us within our community,” said Michele Naar-Obed of the Interfaith Committee for Migrant Justice.
