As of March 2016, Norway currently employs a weak form of mandatory military service for men and women. In practice recruits are not forced to serve, **instead only those who are motivated are selected**.[\[1\]](https://military-history.fandom.com/wiki/Conscription_in_Norway#cite_note-1) About 60,000 Norwegians are available for conscription every year, but only 8,000 to 10,000 are conscripted.[\[2\]](https://military-history.fandom.com/wiki/Conscription_in_Norway#cite_note-Norwegian_Armed_Forces_-_Conscription_Statistics-2) In earlier times, up until at least the early 2000s, all men aged 19–44 were subject to mandatory service, with good reasons required to avoid becoming drafted.

So my understanding is that the conscription process goes something like this

Do you want to serve your country ?

No

Very well then, I wish you the best of luck in your life, bye !

  1. If you are in very good shape they might still force you, but generally if you are not motivated they don’t bother

  2. They also ask questions like… are you physically and mentally fit to serve…

But yeah. Quality over quantity is Norway’s view on defence.

  3. It’s like that now.

When I served, conscription was only for men, and they needed everyone. You couldn’t get out. But it wasn’t bad. I did it, and I’d do it again.

  4. Well not quite… If you have skills e.g. studying medicine or you live in Troms/Finnmark they might insist on conscription no matter what your motivation.
It all depends on what is considered required by Forsvaret.
