Estonian PM says Baltic states would be “wiped off the map” under current NATO plans

  1. >Current NATO defence plans would not prevent Estonia from being wiped off the map and the capital Tallinn from being razed to the ground, the country’s prime minister, Kaja Kallas, was quoted as telling reporters on Wednesday by the Financial Times.

    >Asked about Kallas’ comments, an unnamed NATO official said that the alliance had plans to defend members, “but we never go into operational details”.

    >The official noted that strengthening deterrence and defence will be the focus of the Madrid summit.

    And then from another article

    >Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT reported politicians in the country, a fellow NATO member and ally, were not concerned about Kallas’ comments.

    >The remarks were meant to “raise the political temperature” in the run-up to the NATO summit, said Laurynas Kasčiunas, chairman of the Lithuanian parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defense.

    >Minister of Defense Arvydas Anušauskas said politicians do not always know every detail of defense plans and they often contain different scenarios. He urged people “not to get upset by every politician’s statement”.

    >**”There are no, and there cannot be any assumptions about ceding territory in advance,” the minister said**.

  2. >Commenting on the current plan to “lose [territory] and liberate it afterwards”, Kallas pointed out that atrocities in Bucha near Kyiv were committed by Russian troops within 80 of the invasion. “Now everyone sees that this tripwire concept doesn’t really work,” the Estonian prime minister stressed.

The “tripwire” concept was always feel good, virtue signalling, symbolic bullshit. I imagine everyone is so invested in arguing them that the opinion of the Estonia PM just doesn’t matter, but facts are we either have full commitment or we have nothing.

A lot of people have grown very comfortable with “nothing”, and will refuse to face facts until it’s too late.

  3. I mean what do you expect? These are border countries and they’ll turn into theaters. Of course in any scenario if Russia can be pushed back early on but it’s highly unlikely. There’s no war in vacuum.

  4. This is so dumb. NATO should put that amount of troops that are capable of defending Baltic states and not let genocide there.
