This is honestly scares me, I live in Sweden. Born and raised, here it’s no question about school meals being for free and uni being for free. We should just not charge any kids for food in school. It’s not like it costs very much anyway. Every other country manages this.

If a child is over 13 they can work. Younger children can also be taught to undertake simple production-line tasks (many young children in developing countries do just that). A genuine Conservative government would repeal the 1833 Factory Act and 1842 Mines Act and get those younger children back into work so they can buy their own food. Why should I, a hard working Daily Mail reading tax payer, have to feed other peoples children? They need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, that what I say. /s
In all seriousness, every child deserves (and requires) a healthy nutritional diet in order to flourish. It’s as essential to society as healthcare, transport and energy. Feeding our children is a national issue and I don’t mind funding this from my taxes along with other critical pieces of our nations infrastructure.

How can we live in a country where feeding children is seen as a difficult political decision?
FFS it’s not the job of schools to feed students during the holidays. Why are we listening to footballers who never even graduated school on topics like this?
If you want to feed poor children, use food banks or other established 24/7 organisations. Don’t make a school stay open an extra 3 months a year… to cook meals for people who aren’t even there because school is closed. Just fund the food banks for fucks sake.
Whilst I can see others point that providing free school meals for every child means some well families benefit, I think it’s a good idea. Feed them for breakfast, lunch and in the holidays.
Upping benefits to feckless parents will not mean they spend it on the children – policing how they spend benefits would not be practible.
I’d also like to see all schools have a stock of second hand uniforms for children that need it. Yes some items get warn out, but other are perfectly reusable eg PE kits.
Ugh. It’s so dumb. Just give all children free school meals. Most other countries do it and it’s never caused anywhere to go bankrupt.
We need more basic universal services so that middle class people feel less resentful about paying 40% tax anyway.
