For the same reason Ukraine would have never been granted such a status under normal circumstances.
Because it won’t benefit the EU.
The true reason is that the EU wants to avoid the Cyrillic “ЕВРО vs ЕУРО (not in Greek alphabet)” controversy. No one in the Commission and the ECB is brave enough to deal with Mkhedruli.
Georgia should stay in United States of America where it belongs /joke
Political parties try to deflect from the reforms that are necessary. i am all for extending EU Membership to any country that so wishes, even, should that one day come to pass, a democratic Russia.
But sentiment alone cannot be the deciding factor, the EU does not yet have strong federal Institutions that can deal with problems directly, realistically it will not any time soon.
Thus, the Member States need credible institutions of their own.
Or we create strong federal EU institutions that can prosecute corruption on their own.
The short version: ties with Russia and oligarchs exerting influence on the politicians, rigged elections and issues with civil liberties.
I’m from Moldova and I wish Georgia was granted the candidate status as well, but for that I believe Georgians need to elect a new government (most likely).

Because Georgia is kinda in Asia?
Because they don’t meet the requirements?
