HAMDEN, CT — With the fighting in Iran paused as the sides negotiate a peace deal, a majority of voters think the deal won’t hold and that the cost to achieve the deal was not worth it, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
According to the poll, 60% of voters think the Iran deal was not worth it, and 59% think it wi]ll not work. Democrats (93%) and independent voters (66%) say the deal was not worth it, while 75% of Republicans said it was.
Similarly, 61% of voters think it is very likely or somewhat likely that Iran will develop nuclear weapons, while 33% said it was not so likely or not likely at all.
“After months of diplomatic fits and starts, global economic repercussions and a broad loss of life in the region, a majority of voters make their feelings clear: the Iran war was a bad idea,” said Quinnipiac polling analyst Tim Malloy.
By a 45% to 33% margin, voters said the U.S. is in a weaker position in the world after the war than it was before, with 22% saying the war had not changed the U.S.’s wor;d standing. By a 39% to 31% margin, voters said Iran is also in a weaker position.
Israel, which was part of the war against Iran, has too much support from the U.S., according to 48% of the poll respondents. Another 38% said U.S. support for Israel is at about the right level, and 7% think the U.S. is not supportive enough.
“Netanyahu gets poor marks from American voters as their appetite for supporting Israel wanes, with the share of voters who think the U.S. is too supportive of Israel hitting a new high,” said Malloy.
When it comes to President Donald Trump, the poll put his approval rating at 38%, about the same as it had been before the May 20 poll, where he scored 34% approval. His disapproval is 55%.
On a list of four topics, Trump scored his highest approval on immigration (42%) and lowest on Iran, with 34% approval. Nearly six in 10 voters said the White House is not being transparent about Trump’s health, and half of voters believe he is physically and mentally not healthy.
“Is the president physically and mentally well? On both questions, half of voters have their concerns, and a majority think the White House is keeping them in the dark,” Malloy said.
Finally, voters by a 49% to 42% margin would like to see Democrats in control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Given a choice of 10 items and asked which are important to them, the cost of living topped the list with 70% rating it as important. Healthcare (59%), ethics in government (57%), immigration (57%), and voting rights (53%) rounded out the top 5. Gun violence, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Donald Trump, AI data centers and the Epstein investigation all received between 38% and 41% rating as important.
On the Epstein investigation, 70% disapproved of the Trump administration’s handling, and 73% approve of the U.S. House Oversight Committee’s investigation of the administration’s handling of the case.
The poll included 1,165 self-identified registered voters nationwide, surveyed from June 18 – June 22 with a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points, including the design effect.
