Dear Swiss people, I am currently writing a paper in which I investigate how the multilingual countries of Switzerland and Belgium compare in their national unity. To me, it has always occurred like the national unity in Switzerland is a lot higher than in Belgium, while both being countries with a diverse linguistic situation. Therefore, I would really appreciate it if you could fill out this very short questionnaire, it would mean a lot to me!
Love from The Netherlands to you lovely people!

  1. Question: the first question is for ones own native language, you list German, however most Swiss growing up in the “German” speaking part of the country are actually Swiss German native speakers and only learn Standard German as a foreign language in school.

So are we supposed to choose “Other” and write Swiss German, or are you implying that Swiss German and Standard German are the same language?

  2. That is a really interesting topic. My prediction is Swiss say they feel more connected to the whole but actually only consider “their” language because they don’t come in contact with the others. Another thing not to underestimate is the feeling towards a region/canton. This probably would be stronger than the linguistic unity.
