What are peoples thoughts on the french doing exercises in our EEZ ?

  1. They’re allies and friends of Ireland and if the shit ever hit the fan, we’d depend on them to assist us.

Absolutely no problem with them training in our EEZ as long as they don’t disrupt our own navy or fishermen.

Note that our EEZ is not the same as our territorial sea. We don’t own our EEZ but we do have sovereign rights over it.

  2. We should be paying the French to patrol our waters if we can’t manage it, we certainly should be welcoming them engaging in exercises for free.

  3. Given that they’re our friends, what they’re doing is legal and we are not capable of defending our own waters in the event of significant conflict, I have no problem with it.

  4. I don’t see the issue since they’re no threat to us so idc. Only people who will actually care are people who want something to screech about like Daly and Wallace.

  5. >“We know the impact of military sonar and live missile launches have the potential to severely disrupt the annual migratory path of fish and dramatically interrupt the breeding season of mackerel and other migratory fish species,” he said.

    >“The Albacore tuna fishery is opening for Irish vessels on June 23 in the waters of our continental shelf which could potentially be disrupted by these live fire exercises whilst also we believe this will cause untold damage to marine wildlife like whales and dolphins that are greatly affected by underwater noise.”

Don’t think any of the replies here read the article.

They definitely shouldn’t go ahead and the fishermen are correct in protesting this just as they were correct before.

  6. Exclusive Economic Zone. It is under our jurisdiction, therefore aside from European statutes regarding trade and fisheries and so forth it is governed by Irish law in the majority of cases and by maritime law for disputes arising form disputes in that area. It is not fully regarded as international waters due to the fact that it is allocated to a country and that country is recognized as having a right to the resources held therein. It should also be restricted to forgien military drills by all countries, if one cannot be permitted then the others should not be permitted.

  7. The story has been clarified. They are conducting the exercise in their own EEZ and there is a potential that some projectiles/missiles might fall in part of our EEZ.

The key difference in this situation and the one previous this year, is that the country that sailed half way around the world to shake its penis in our backyard and map trans-Atlantic cables is nearly 5 months into a war with the initial pretext of destroying wholly a sovereign nation whilst the French are one of our biggest advocates in recent years conducting exercises in their own exclusive economic zone that borders our own.
