German coalition deal sealed, to be presented later Wednesday

  1. >Germany’s Social Democrats, Greens and Free Democrats have almost concluded coalition talks, the parties say. This means the country will likely have a new government well before Christmas.

  2. I’m bouncing somewhere between “hope” and “dread” as to what kind of concessions the FDP managed to wring out of the SPD and the Greens, particularly on climate change policies.

Things may get particularly interesting with the Greens, as the (by their party statutes, I believe) have to submit the coalition agreement to their party base for ratification before they can join in a government, and the base has been *very* vocal about not caving too much to the FDP. Agreement by the FDP and SPD are nearly a given, as they only have to get the approval from their respective party leadership groups.

  3. Can somebody please link to the full text of the coalition agreement?

I’ve been searching but no luck so far…

  4. Noob question: Why coalition? As you can tell I’m not very updated in politics. Shouldn’t the party with highest vote just take over? Sorry that was the system in my Heimatland. Maybe it’s different here

  5. > Immigrants able to apply for citizenship after five years and allow dual citizenship, a huge change for thousands of ethnic Turks, many of whom remain foreign nationals after decades in Germany

Any more details about this? I want to know since if I wanted to get German citizenship I would have to give my original which is not worth it but if they allow dual citizenship I will be applying ASAP.
